Hello ‘fishing and boating’ friends. The holiday’s and early part of this month (January) have brought out the best in people’s desire to put the stalemated Pandemic behind them to enjoy outdoor life on the water, fishing and boating. Many past clients and friends continue to insist on ‘getting out in the fresh air to enjoy the beaches and fishing’.

October is definitely a ‘transitional’ month for most any of the Florida waters when it comes to inshore or offshore fishing. Air and water temperatures are coming down with the advent of the cold fronts from the north, east and northwest. Reef species move to shallower water and even inshore in some instances. Nonetheless, all species remain active and in good numbers with more migratory species, such as Spanish Mackerel, Permit and Kingfish arriving daily. Summertime heat is over.
Greeting ‘fishing and boating’ friends! The waters of SW Florida and other ‘Ports of Calls’ are full of new boaters and clients looking to escape the restrictions that the COVID-19 Pandemic and scare has created. It appears to be the best escape on the planet and many are re-kindling the flames by enjoying their boats and fishing equipment of yesteryear, while others are just getting into the recreational aspects of fishing and boating. Labor Day Weekend was a testament to the number of people boating, fishing and enjoying the waters. Boats were out in huge numbers to support the Presidential Candidates with their flags waving and music playing.
The Corona Virus Pandemic has not stopped 1st Mate Vicki and I or others from enjoying the beautiful waters all around the State of Florida. The demand for boats, accessories and fishing equipment for recreation is at an all time high allowing our marine industry to introduce the ‘Wonderful World of Boating and Fishing’ to a larger client base. If one does not believe it, just go looking for boats, rods, reels and other accessories and they will find inventories at low levels.
It is that time of year when I relish the opportunity to climb aboard Fish Face II with clients and once in a great while with my 1st Mate Vicki. In spite of the recent and existing Pandemic (Corona Virus) our Cape Coral Mayor Joe Coviello, City Council members and Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno, had the savvy and foresight to leave open the city boat ramps for residents and visitors to enjoy boating and fishing activities so long as there is compliance with the ‘Social Distancing Guidelines’.

The latter part of November proved to be good for boaters and fishermen/ladies alike. We had a great 2019 Boat Show in Ft. Myers on the waterfront with lots of vendors displaying and selling the latest in marine related products. Myself, 1stMate Vicki, Nadeen and Phil of Coastal Angler Magazine enjoyed meeting a number of attendees along with clients at the Fishing Village during the event. We are now looking forward to the Bonita Boat Show scheduled for March 5, 6, 7 and 8 at the Race Track Fairgrounds on Bonita Beach Road.

This writing features some really great times and moments with clients fishing with their families as well as boating and fishing with my family. This all came about after the successful Bonita Boat Show that Vicki and I attended at the Grey Hound Race Track in early March. Exhibitors featured a diversity of marine products, including fishing seminars to wet any angler’s appetite. It is also a time when Vicki and I have a few days together enjoying the industry that we represent while having the opportunity to spend one on one time with friends and clients, sharing fishing and boating experiences. It is that time of year when the SWFMIA have their product show at the Grey Hound Race Track parking lot on Bonita Road. This is an exciting event that 1st Mate Vicki and I are always excited to participate. It starts on Thursday and ends Sunday (February 28-March 3rd). Look for us at the Coastal Angler Magazine/Fish Face Charters booths. I will also be doing daily fishing seminars at the Frank’s Fishing Village. These seminars are designed to assist fishermen and ladies looking to improve their level of experience and angling success through discussion and demonstrations. Vicki and I are encouraging anyone interested to stop by our booth and check the seminar schedule.

A lot of fun times and memories were made while fishing with Captain Terry Fisher over the holidays. Pictured here are several of my client friends and their families that I had the pleasure to spend time with on the water during the last week of December and into the first part of January 2019. Fishing was tough at times due to the cold fronts and other factors, but persistence seems to always provide just enough action to make it all worthwhile.
The inshore bite has been as good this year as any I recall. Snook are in the passes, under docks and in the back areas of Pine Island Sound. Plenty of white bait, Pinfish and other offerings will entice these fish. Snook season opens September 1st, so I suggest one takes the opportunity to practice up on angling skills so as to land and harvest a slot-size fish when the opportunity arrives next month.
