January fishing has been fairly good when the temperatures allow one to go out. However, this year both cold weather and high winds have forced a lot of people to cancel or postpone boating and fishing trips. Red Tide has also affected the bite both offshore and inshore. Red Tide reports of dead fish off the beaches of Sanibel, N. Captiva, Cayo Costa, Boca Grande and Venice. Offshore as far as 50 miles out directly SW and West of Redfish Pass. The bite has been negatively affected in these areas. My advice is to avoid these areas until the reports cease.
None-the-less, numerous areas not affected are up and down Pine Island Sound in the grass flats in (4 to 5 feet) of water and along the docks and piles. Seatrout in the grass flats. Sheepshead, Redfish, Snook, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle and Black Drum under docks and around piles. Have the faith, as the ‘Fishing God’s’ surely will give us more days to enjoy our boats and fishing expeditions. At the time of this report (mid-January) the weather is cold and rainy with high winds. Come the last week of January, I am looking forward to warmer weather, higher tides and lower wind forecasts, at least periodically. Expect fishing to pick up as we make the turn in February to March.
The Annual Bonita Boat Show will begin at the old horse racing track on February 27-March 2 (4 days). Myself, Captain Terry Fisher (Fish Face Charters) and Captain Jay Rodriquez (Salty Native Charters) of Cape Coral, will be on hand at the ‘Fishing Seminar Tent’ to meet, greet and provide information that will help make everyone’s inshore and off shore fishing trips more successful. We will be on hand every day doing a minimum of 4 one-hour seminars daily. Check the SW Marine Industries Boat Show Manual for times starting at 10:30am-3:30pm. This is a great time to check out new and pre-owned boat inventories as well as other marine related products, all on display at the Bonita Boat Show. We always offer a chance to win a ‘FREE INSHORE FISHING CHARTER for TWO’ after the boat show. BE SURE TO ATTEND AND REGISTER TO WIN!
