Ft. Myers Beach to Charlotte Harbor – November 17, 2015

Prior to the cold front of last week, the fishing continued to be good for all inshore species. Offshore reports also were positive for Triple Tail, Grouper and other reef species.

Inshore catches for Redfish were exceptional until the last few days and before the north and northeast winds blew out the water from the shallows around oyster beds and the mangroves. Pictured here is a group of 5 holding their bounty of Redfish during an early morning charter. They are Mr. Ben Davis, of Cape Coral, Steve Smith and Chris Hall of Ft. Myers and Glenn and Colleen Gabrys of Crown Pointe, Indiana.

The flats produced lots of action and fun for the Paul Kelly family from Glenview, Illinois. His children Patrick (9), Peyton (8) and Brooke (5) are pictured here with their Seatrouts. Partrick and Peyton caught lots of fish that day and had lots of fun. They caught a variety of species and the family was pleasure to spend time with. I am looking forward to doing it again next year.

I expect fishing to be good over the weekend and into early next week with a full moon phase and so long as an aggressive cold front does not approach.

“October is the month!” says captain Terry

(Ft. Myers Beach to Charlotte Harbor) My 1st Mate (Vicki) and I recently returned from our ‘ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL FISHING AND DIVING EXPEDITION’ in Greece and Italy. I am happy to be back in SW Florida to do some serious ‘Redfishing’ and Snook fishing. October is the month! As reported prior to traveling, I was on them before I left and I have been on them since my return of October 1. Prior to departing on September 1, I had the pleasure of taking out three gentlemen from The Quarry in Naples. They are all members of the Quarry Fishing Club and they all caught their share of big Redfish. Pictured here are Tom Bothe (center), Jim Rainey (right side) and Bill Flister each holding one of their many catches. Bill (pictured on the left) is also the President of The Quarry Fishing Club, of which I plan on doing a seminar at their clubhouse later this month.

The ‘NEW’ moon phase is upon us offering up some strong currents and hopefully lots more action over the next week or so. That being said however, with all of the rain, tide levels should remain higher than projected past the middle of the month, allowing access to locations that these game fish seek for food and extra protection. The balance of October will bring in a ‘FULL’ moon phase, keeping good fishing opportunities alive all month. Target both Snook and Redfish with artificial or live presentations on the incoming or outgoing tides around the mangroves.

Moreover, October is simply a great month to fish. Good tides, good wind directions and many species, such as Seatrouts, Flounders, Spanish Mackerels, Mangrove Snappers, Jack Crevalles and the ‘Resident’ Tarpon continuing to be very active. They will all hit shrimp on the flats and around the mangroves under a popping cork presentation.

(Ft. Myers Beach to Charlotte Harbor)  This week offers us great fishing with a ‘full’ moon and higher tide levels which will allow access for many anglers to the remote areas. The stronger currents will provide more oxygen to the water and will improve the bite as well.

The Redfish bite has been strong and plentiful! I suggest getting to the mangroves and working the incoming before the tides ‘max’ out for your best chances. Redfish are not as easy to find once they leave the mangroves and oyster beds. The baits of choice have been large handpicked shrimps, cut pinfish and crabs. As the summer temperatures ‘heat up’ I’ve noticed the big bull Redfish are coming in from the gulf sooner than expected.

Captain Terry had a ‘special treat’ a few weeks ago and was able to fish the freshwater lakes and ponds with three of his grandchildren that are pictured here. Landon (8) is pictured with his large Catfish, Addison (7) is pictured with her Bluegill and Avery (4) is pictured with her Crappie!

Captain Terry says “ Live, dead, cut baits will be one’s best bet …”

(Ft. Myers Beach to Charlotte Harbor) Fishing has remained good during the month of October for most species. I had the opportunity to take a Martin Smith of Cape Coral out with his grandson’s ( Isaac and Ethan) from Churubusco, Indiana to do some ‘serious’ fishing and ‘catching’.. We left around noon to target some Seatrout on the flats (as the tides were better later in the day for Redfish and Snook). I was elated and surprised to find out that both Isaac and his 7 year old brother, Ethan were very experienced and proved it over and over again throughout the afternoon by catching Seatrout, Snook and Redfish in good numbers. Pictured here is Ethan, being helped by his father to hold a 23″ Redfish that he fought and landed late in the day. He also hooked and landed his first Snook. Not to be outdone, Isaac caught his first Redfish as well. Great job guys!

Snook, Permit, Seatrout, Redfish and Mangrove Snappers are very active and it should only get better as the full moon cycle approaches and the daytime higher tide levels provide opportunity to backcountry venues. Live, dead, cut baits will be one’s best bet and it appears that the weather patterns will be favorable as forecasted.

Finally, I am pictured with a couple of my favorite client friends, Jade Tilford and Elizabeth Goodin of Kevil, Kentucky who I have the pleasure of spending a day each year with to do shelling, site seeing, lunch and yes, a little fishing as well. See you next year ladies.

Full moon on the horizon.

(Ft. Myers Beach to Charlotte Harbor) October is ‘Redfish Month’. Those anglers seeking their dream of hooking, fighting and landing a big Redfish should make arrangements to target this species now; especially with a ‘full moon on the horizon’! Notwithstanding that we are still a week away, both of the daily high tide cycles should provide plenty of water to seek out the fish in a number of areas around Punta Rassa Bay, Buck Key as well as other areas on the immediate east side of Sanibel, Captiva and North Captiva Island locations. Areas of Pineland, Matlacha and Two Pines will have lower water levels than I desire, making them less productive for many anglers.

There are plenty of bait options, ‘white’ baits off virtually every sandbar as well as big Threadfin’s off the beaches. Big shrimps and cut Pinfish are both good options. Recently, I had the pleasure of taking Frank Petrick and his son Jonah, of Lehigh Acres, Florida on a charter. Pictured here is Mr. Frank holding a beautiful Redfish he caught on a cut Pinfish under a mangrove. His son Jonah proved his angling abilities as well by catching a variety of fish, including a large Snook.

On a subsequent charter, I had the pleasure to fish with Mr. Tom Ryle, his wife Shirley and son Wes of Covington, Kentucky. Tom and Shirley now spend considerable time on Sanibel enjoying our beautiful weather. Within minutes of making a shrimp presentation along an oyster laden spoil island, Shirley landed the 29 inch Redfish pictured here. Unfortunately, it was over the maximum ‘slot’ size of 27″.

Nonetheless, Tom caught a 24 inch Red for dinner. They all caught a variety of species that afternoon as the tides moved into the back country areas around Punta Rassa and Tropical Home Site areas. Nice job Tom and Shirley! Let’s do it again!

Captain Terry says “Approaching ‘full moon’ and hopefully moderate temperatures, fish should continue to be receptive”

(Ft. Myers Beach to Charlotte Harbor) Last week proved good fishing. The only inconvenience were the winds blowing 10-20 knots out of the North/Northeast restricting access to some of my favorite spots. Snook, Seatrout and Redfish have been my emphasis; especially since Snook season is in ‘full-swing’ and all species are here in good numbers up and down Pine Island Sound and Matlacha Pass. Grouper and other migratory species are closer to shore with winter months approaching.

Jonathan Downs SnookSteven and Jonathan CohenIn the ‘back country’, I had the opportunity to fish with Mr. Steve Cohen and his grandson Jonathan Downs of Lansdale, PA. (pictured on the way back to port from a day on the water).  I also took the time to capture Jonathan with his first Snook. It was only one of many fish he caught that day. He showed a lot of natural talent required to become a superior angler.  I am looking forward to taking them again next year.

Fishing will probably be ‘tough’ the balance of the week and into the weekend with the cold front and high winds. Nonetheless, with the approaching ‘full moon’ and hopefully moderate temperatures, fish should continue to be receptive to most presentations, especially live pilchards.
