Southwest Florida is beautiful from the shore, but some places are simply better when you arrive by boat.

That is the idea behind Go Boating Florida’s Better by Boat campaign, a growing destination series created to inspire boaters to explore more of the incredible waterways, islands, sandbars, restaurants, and coastal communities that make this region so special.

From quiet back bays and hidden barrier islands to lively waterfront hangouts and iconic local stops, Better by Boat highlights the experiences that remind us why boating is such a big part of life on Florida’s southwest coast. Each featured destination gives boaters a closer look at where to go, what to expect, and why the journey by water is part of the fun.

The series currently features destinations like Cabbage Key, known for its Old Florida charm and legendary cheeseburger; Shell Key Preserve, a peaceful barrier island near St. Pete Beach with clear Gulf water and great shelling; Cayo Costa State Park, a remote stretch of natural shoreline north of Captiva; and The Ten Thousand Islands, where winding channels and mangrove islands create one of Florida’s most scenic boating adventures.

You’ll also find classic coastal stops like Fort Myers Beach, refined retreats like Gasparilla Island, social escapes like Beer Can Island, and history-rich destinations like Egmont Key. Together, they show just how many different ways there are to enjoy a day on the water, from anchoring off for a swim to tying up for lunch, exploring nature, or discovering a new favorite route.

What makes Better by Boat different is that it is not just a list of places. It is meant to be a starting point for planning your next trip, with destination inspiration and video content from across the boating community to help you get a feel for each location before you go.

Before heading out, always check local conditions, tides, access rules, anchoring guidelines, and safety requirements for your destination. A little planning helps make every trip smoother, safer, and more enjoyable.
